Osteopathy to treat stress

Osteopathy can help to balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems to relieve symptoms of prolonged stress. The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for the ‘fight or flight’ response, and the parasympathetic nervous system restores a state of calm, so it’s important to have a balance between the two. Your osteopath can also talk you through some breathing exercises you can use to help you in times of stress.

We all feel stressed at times. However, prolonged stress can be tough on the body and mind. Your osteopath can make sure you’re better equipped to deal with stress, improving your day-to-day life.

Osteopathy can help you find ways to deal with stress, as well as helping to relieve the unpleasant physical symptoms it can leave you with.

Osteopathy can:

reduce

Help to ensure your body
is in the best possible posture. This means all signals going from the brain to the body can get through properly.

Release the ribs and muscles
surrounding the neck and torso, so you can breathe properly and get all the oxygen you need. This can be done using stretching, articulation and muscle energy techniques.

Help you work on your breathing,
giving you tools to deal with stress in the long term. Your osteopath can show you breathing exercises to do during your session and at home, which can help you in moments of stress.

Calm down the sympathetic system,
which will help those suffering with the effects of chronic stress. This can be done with some soft tissue massage, and inhibition of the structures surrounding the thoracic spine.

Case study:
helping our patient deal with stress

See how we helped our patient improve her physical and mental wellbeing.

Problem

Our patient came to OsteoWellbeing with shoulder and neck pain. During her case history the patient mentioned she was going through a stressful time at work where she felt she was being bullied, and she was involved in a complaints procedure about it. Then, during her examination, she burst into tears due to the stress the work situation was causing her. It was clear this stress was having a huge impact on both her mental and physical wellbeing!

Solution

After some treatment for our patient’s physical symptoms, we also worked on calming the system in your body that gets activated when you are stressed for a long period of time. We could not do anything about her work situation directly, but we helped by listening to her and providing a space where she could feel heard and looked after.

We gave her exercises she could do at home to help improve her posture, as well as breathing exercises to help keep her calm at times of stress. The treatments helped the patient immensely and not only is she now in a job she loves, she tells us she feels a lot more confident. She’s moved further away from the clinic, making physical treatment difficult, but we keep in regular contact for little catchups.

What did our patient think?

Süheyla offers quality services, professionalism, punctuality and a warm friendly environment every time. I have noticed significant improvements in my (L) shoulder and body, since having treatment. I was very happy with my progress, so I booked on to a weekly reasonably priced longer-term programme. Thank you so much Süheyla you have given me back my confidence and changed my life.
